About The Lindsay Lilac Gardens

Lilac Gardens of Lindsay (LGOL) is a  committee of the Lindsay and District Horticultural Society. In partnership with the City of Kawartha Lakes Parks and Recreation Department, we have established a lilac plantation at Logie Street Park in Lindsay and other locations throughout Lindsay.  Logie St. Park contains approximately 130 varieties of Lilacs. LGOL hosts the annual Lindsay Lilac Festival the last week of May. Free tours  of the lilacs are given daily during the festival and the weekend comes alive with music, art, food and children's programs.

While Logie Street Park  is our main location, LGOL has planted and maintained lilacs at Jim Flynn Park, Sir Sanford Fleming College, Caressant Care, Riverside Cemetery, Victoria Manor, Polito Lincoln Sales, and various locations on Kent Street West. LGOL is a member of the International Lilac Society.

The Lilac Gardens of Lindsay

A Millennium Project for the Citizens of Lindsay

In 1994, Len Shea organized a committee of past “Citizens of the Year” to develop a Millennium Project. The project selected was to make Lindsay “abundant with lilacs”. The committee sought and received support from the Lindsay & District Horticultural Society and the Master Gardeners. The concept was to provide, through plantings of lilacs on public lands and private properties, a spectacular display of lilacs for the beautification of Lindsay, and a major attraction to visitors to the area.

In 1996, the Parks Board Management designated Logie Street Park to be the “Lilac Gardens of Lindsay” and in 1998, the first lilacs were planted by volunteers.

In 1999, a Butterfly Garden was developed by Master Gardeners, led by Dave McLean with a grant from the Canadian Wildlife Federation and a seed money grant from the Lindsay and District Horticultural Society for the planting of lilacs. Contributions as “Memorial Donations” were also received. In 2000, donations from the Senior Citizens were recognized with a plaque. The Lilac Gardens offer a unique Memory Walk program where a lilac may be dedicated to mark an event such as a birth, death or significant anniversary.

In 2002, the Canada Blooms judges recognized the significant volunteer contribution of planting over 130 varieties of lilacs at the Logie Street Park.

In 2004, the Lilac Gardens of Lindsay became part of the Lindsay & District Horticultural Society.

In 2007, The City of Kawartha Lakes proclaimed the lilac as the official shrub of the city.

In 2009, a Welcome Garden was created for year round interest and a portion of the Kawartha Lakes Trans Canada Trail was completed through the Lilac Gardens.

In 2010, the Lilac Gardens in partnership with the Salute to Heroes committee created a Heroes Garden with a commemorative plaque honouring the military, police, fire and emergency services.

The Lilac Gardens of Lindsay’s objective is to develop a lilac arboretum recognized by the International Lilac Society and to create a multi seasonal horticultural showplace for the City of Kawartha Lakes.
